Good variety, positive energy. It would be nice if Peter slowed things down first to teach concepts or show lines, so I wouldn't have to rewind and slow down the player multiple times just to figure out what he's doing. I'd also like to see him demonstrate how to build an arrangement. For example, take a simple standard or pop tune, play the melody, then add chords, bass, etc and show step by step what he's adding to the arrangement.

I needed to get major scale vocabulary, scale degrees and intervals as a foundation, before joining open studio. With that in the pocket i feel that all steps are well navigated, in terms of clarity, pacing and the delicate balance between terminology and feel- aesthetic approach. For me the major breakthroughs were in how i think about what to play not so much the actual playing- drilling, as i approach learning first from understanding then applying ( my primary interest is music composition- production fully in the box - DAW while i welcome improving my playing expression on keys)

I really like Open Studio, you make a great job. Courses are well organized and explanations are clear, short, right to the point, and beutifully exemplified. Transcriptions are very well done. The people who make the transcriptions in Open Studio is really good. I'm a professional composer, with formal education in composition and a post-degree specialization, but as a pianist I'm still on my way, and Open Studio opened the door for me for high quality education, and put me on the right track. Thank you very much, Peter, Adam, and the rest of the team.

Very helpful, engaging and informative jazz standard lessons, along with great step-by-step descriptions of the method to use to learn a jazz standard over a month's time.

Open Studio does a fantastic job of breaking down concepts and providing materials for students to improve their playing. They include video examples, pdf sheets with exercises in all 12 keys, and multiple additional resources for further learning. Even as a professional piano player, I have found their lessons extremely helpful and insightful. If I had to choose something to improve, the only thing I would add are suggested fingering patterns for some of the examples in trickier keys.

I liked the old Open Studio layout and navigation just fine. It was not perfect, but I was used to it. The topics and labeling in the new Open Studio are more complicated, and sometimes a 2nd option needs to be selected before navigation to a topic or page is inabled; however, the user is not always notified that they need to make the 2nd option selection ( You click on the 1st option and nothing happens; you get no warning messages nor prompt to select the 2nd option ). I like learning whole tunes along with theory and technique. That is the way the context on how to utilize these things is solidified in my playing. It doesn't need to be a complex arrangement unless the concept really calls for it.

The site is really excellent. I love that you can click on the sheet music at any location and that it takes you right to that point in the recording. I think that's an amazing feature. I love the "sheet music" following perfectly along with the music, and the options of showing the keyboard and simultaneous playing. The calibre and quality of the lessons is phenomenal, and I love the attitude of the instructors. I only have good things to say.

I’ve been a member on and off since 2012. The lessons from Peter were good for quite a while and every so often a good lesson comes up, but as of late they haven’t been too great: They are too long in length and he spends too much time on trivial things and sometimes never even gets to the soloing aspect, spending too long on the heads. Also goes over a lot of the same material or tunes that have been done before. Please go over new tunes that have not been covered before and go over more requests from the Lesson Requests page. Those things alone would be a huge improvement.

Hi Justin, Thanks so much for your feedback. Have you seen the updated Lesson Requests area? Now you can see all the requests in one place in the Community, add your suggestions, and upvote other members' requests. Plus, OSpro members can join Peter's Jazz Piano Method recording sessions live on Wednesdays and he does Q&A at the end where you can ask him any questions about the lesson of the week. Let us know if you have any other recommendations for improving JPM or the OS Community. Thanks and happy practicing! Rachel Morgan Operations @ Open Studio

It’s really great! I took a few years of jazz piano lessons in my teens which gave me a good foundation, but I always struggled to put all the pieces together. These courses are exactly what I need to start filling in the gaps. I especially appreciate the emphasis on the mental aspect of learning jazz (patience, consistency, etc.).

Hi Timothy, To access live events, click the blinking "live" icon at the top of the page before the session is starting, or go straight to the Events Calendar linked on your dashboard. Mentor Session recordings are now in the new Community section of Open Studio. Standard members now have access to a space to easily interact with other members, share playing, and get questions answered. You can always reach out to us directly via chat or email - we're here to help. Once you get acclimated to the enhanced site, consider revising your review. Happy practicing!

This Open Studio has everything for all levels for many instruments. My instrument happens to be the piano. I've learned so many things so far, jazz-related and otherwise. Adam is the best course instructor on piano as he is clear with his instructions and he shows much patience and enthusiasm both in his Guided Practice Sessions and in explaining the many concepts in his courses. I also enjoy his 'Shorts' on Facebook and Instagram, etc. I like Peter Martin as well, but since I'm new at playing jazz, I tend to get lost more in his courses as he moves very quickly. I do revisit his courses in hopes of learning a concept or two. So many other opportunities are provided with the Open Studio Community Page, as well as with their many 'live' sessions. Their website is easy to navigate especially with the new additions to it. Whenever I have a music question, it is answered quickly (thank you, Rachel!). This is the best jazz studio group to join if you are a musician and want to learn more, whatever level. Soo worth the $$$.

You guys are the best!! Open Studio makes me happy every day. Peter and Adam, you have put together such a strong selection of lessons from basic to advanced. Though I am a pianist, I also learn so much from the other lessons on offer (bass, drums, vibes etc...) The instructors in Open Studio are clearly a passionate masters. Very thankful also for your practice sessions that really take my playing out of the conceptual into the real world of "getting my hands into it" Thank you so much for creating a wonderful learning tool! Keep up the good work!

Open Studio is an amazing community for learners and lovers of music. It's open in spirit and attitude: anyone who wants to learn and respect the community of learners is welcome. It's a studio -- where you practice, experiment, goof up, regroup, and grow. It has become a fixture in my musical adventure.

Open Studio Jazz is the best online source for anyone who want to continue studying music on your own. Both Adam and Peter are very knowledgeable and encouraging. In my opinion, I got lucky and signed up with them at a time where I think I got a real steal.

Open Studio is worth every penny! The guided practice sessions, especially in the beginner courses, take away all the guess work about how to put into practice what Adam and Peter teach on the theory side. The site redesign that just debuted adding course bookmarks makes it just about perfect.
