Our driver broke down on the M1, 9.5 miles away from south mimms services at 05:10 as account holders the driver called RAC at 05:20, mechanic was on site shortly after and advised it needed recovery. Recovery truck arrived around 7am and took driver to South Mimms arriving at 07:30 to be told that somebody else would now collect him, at 10:18 he was collected by SECOND recovery truck for a 30 mile trip to Thurrock services arriving at 10:58. The driver was then told ANOTHER truck would collect him to take him back to Whitstable (our depot). 5hours 40mins later from arriving at Thurrock after multiple phone calls and being told truck will be with you in an hour, at 16:40 driver is collected for the 3rd time to make the last leg of the journey finally arriving at 18:00. UNACCEPTABLE..

Hi - just sharing some RAC service issues. I have been a member for over 25 years and happy with the service in the past. However, I had a breakdown in December on a bitterly cold night & the RAC declined to send out help as their system indicated that my car was within 0.25 miles from my home & I did not have home cover. I sent evidence that this was not the case & stated that I had young children with me & they still declined to help. So, I had to abandon the car, get myself home & then arrange for the car to be recovered & repaired. I sent in a formal written complaint on the 10th December & I am yet to have that resolved. All I have had from the RAC is an email asking for more time. It takes 30 seconds to go onto google earth & check the distance I was from my home so I can only assume they have specially trained snails for this job as I cant see the need for 2 months to verify the distance..... So - dire customer service, failure to send help to a single parent with children on a freezing night & then complete failure to resolve a complaint within 2 months..... Please be aware of how the RAC is currently treating its members.

unhelpful and rude advisors. I was told my car is at home when I clearly said it was on the roadside over half a mile away. I have tried to explain where the car was but they didn't listen to me and hung up on my face while I was speaking and the advisor has assumed that the car was at home just because I didn't remember the postcode from where the car was left on the roadside. I have stated that the car was about 15 minutes within walking distance and that's why I have called from home but no one wanted to listen. When a complained was made I have had an email telling me my car was at home and therefore they would not cover me!!! I went to check my parking space just in case I was crazy but the car was not there! great RAC, thanks for being so human!

Our car battery was dead so we called out RAC. Breakdown man told us to replace the battery as it was defunct and unable to hold a charge. Car was tested to see if any unnecessary drains on battery but told all was fine.He told us that he could fit an RAC battery with a 5 year guarantee that would be reliable and we could be worry free as the RAC would replace it if it failed within the 5 year guarantee. We agreed despite it costing over £160 for peace of mind. A few months later the battery died. We had not driven the car on this occasion for about 5 days. RAC man tested the battery and said as it was just above 11.9v he was unable to give us a new one under the warranty but to call again if it failed again. He put a charge in the battery and that was that. We use the car quite a lot and have driven to Cork via Wales and return so underused was not an issue. Warranty stipulated that car must have been driven over 2000 miles. It was well over that and was regularly used Battery was flat again couple weeks back after 3 days of being unused. RAC man tested the battery and said it was no good. It was well under 11.9v and wouldn't hold a charge. He could find nothing wrong with the car. No lights had been left on etc. We expected him to change the battery under warranty as it was still well under 1 year since fitting. We were informed that as it was under 11v he could not change it under warranty. So it seems the warranty is not fit for purpose wether the battery records either under or over 11v. The company is totally disingenuous. Be warned never to purchase a battery from the RAC. I have written two complaints to their customer service and have just been fobbed off saying we have not been covered by the warranty terms and conditions! They appreciate our frustration but they are joking.... they certainly do not. Unbelievable. I have been with RAC for years now. Had only a couple of breakdowns. Had to wait hours and hours for recovery but just accepted that they were busy and didn't complain. However selling a battery that is unfit for purpose with a 5 year warranty and then refusing to change it under warranty is unforgivable and surely against the law. Will be taking this matter to Trading standards and the Financial Ombudsman.

BUYER BEWARE. Do NOT purchase breakdown cover from the RAC. I have been a member of the RAC for 53 years and can honestly say that when using their services on probably no more than 8 occasions over the years they have provided an acceptable service. I can't remember waiting more than an hour or more and so continued to buy my annual breakdown cover. Since the early years when my vehicles were not as reliable I have been lucky enough to own newer and more reliable cars and therefore not needed their services for many years now. Unfortunately when driving my classic car it broke down and so I had to call upon the services of the RAC. That's when I have realised that the RAC are not fit for purpose. I was given an eta of 2 hours which came and went. I called them to be advised that it would be a further 2 hours. By this time it was dark and I was freezing cold. After explaining that I was 72 years old and had broken down in a dangerous place I was put as a vulnerable case but the eta couldn't be changed and kept using covid as an excuse as to why I would have to wait. After that 2 hours had come and gone I rang again to be told that my new eta was another 2 hours away. I had already waited for nearly 6 hours and so decided to make my own arrangements to get home. Making a formal complaint the next day I eventually received an email apologising for their failure but still blaming everything on the effect of Covid. The bottom line is after all my years of paying for a service that I hadn't needed to use the time when I really needed their help it was non existence. To me the RAC is a business NOT fit for purpose. I certainly won't be renewing my membership ever again.

RAC CAR WARRANTY , not worth what it's printed on , tried to cancel ,spoke to a lady who insisted SHE was the expert on the matter! , she didn't know Diddley ,very rude obnoxious woman. Then spoke to a much more understanding lady from Bristol who sorted it out , without any problems . What is the matter with people in this day and age? , The consumer does not like being mis sold useless , promises , commitments to help you out , when you need it most, at exorbitant amounts of money, DO NOT PURCHASE RAC WARRANTY .

Avoid at all costs Avoid at all costs. Join the AA Last Friday I broke down at 11:07am. I called the RAC and reported the break down. 12:04pm I was called back and advised the vehicle would need a full recovery and a patrol was no good. That was perfect planning and spot on. I was asked where did I want to be recovered to. I specified a postcode. I was told that I only had a 10mile tow. (This is in dispute and the level of cover is not what I was after.) I was told for an additional 4.75 miles I would need to pay a top up of £100. When I questioned the lady on the phone about this I was told the following. Even if the level of cover is not correct its tough luck today as no matter what I did about my membership, I'd still have to pay the £100. The lady then cut the call. Given that it could have been a poor phone signal I called back. The lady I then spoke to was very helpful and kind. She informed me that there was no job and the recovery had been cancelled. After a few mins and further questions and details I was told that the recovery had been reinstated but that a patrol would be sent to assess my vehicle. By 1pm I'd heard nothing so I called back for an update only to be told that the recovery had been cancelled at 12:04pm because I'd apparently refused to pay £100. (Which wasn't true) eventually by 1.58pm after parting with £100 I was told that help was on the way and the recovery would be with me by 4:45pm. (Please note I reported the break down at 11:07am. I recieved a phone call from westbourne recovery asking where I was located. I asked when they would arrive. I was told they couldn't give me a time as they were very busy. This was frustrating. I called back the RAC and while on the phone the lady said the recovery had been put back untill 7pm. The special intervention team got involved. They authorised a cab for my wife which cost £42. They also authorised up to £150 for me to find my own recovery. While this was arranged the recovery time was delayed untill 9pm. (Please not again recovery reported at 11:07am.) I've eventually got back to where I needed to go £292 out of pocket. £100 taken under similar circumstances to extortion to the RAC. £42 to a cab company to get my poor wife home. £150 for my own recovery. I've now been told it's up to 21 days to even get a response from the RAC. I've emailed and asked for updates. Nothing. Eventually after various public Facebook posts they responded. They seem to think the service was acceptable and they were doing me a favour giving me my money back. Avoid at all costs.

RAC is an absolute joke. I don’t know what I’m paying for. 2 times I’ve needed them and both times 4+ hours wait and only option is to toe when all I needed was a battery I didn’t even end up using RAC. DONT use them in changing my insurance company right now.

Took almost 16 hours to recover my car and passenger from London to Huddersfield. Constantly dumped at services and industrial estates by numerous contractors. Nobody speaks to anybody, nobody cares how long you've been left waiting. Your just dumped at services and industrial estate, waiting hours at a time for the next truck, because nobody at RAC has thought to tell the next contractor. At one point after 10 hours, a lady at the RAC suggested I call someone to come pick us up, whilst being 160 miles from home?! Isn't that what I pay you for? Is that not the service your supposed to be providing? How they continue to operate is beyond me. They need to realise they are recovering people, not just vehicles. Abysmal. Avoid them at all costs.

Boyfriend stuck on busy roundabout for over 6hrs. Customer service keep changing what they tell him then deny what was said. Patrol guy not interested in diagnosing fault as he was due to finish in hour. Recovery home being sent from contractor to another. Being told he could be further few hours before moved. Also patrol said was on minor road not actual roundabout. No facilities nearby due to location and its below freezing. Disinterest from rac. Total lack of customer care

I called out the RAC 11 months ago for a flat battery, they said they couldn’t give me a jump start but will replace the battery at a cost of £185 , I had no option to except but they said it’s got a five yr warranty which I thought was a bonus point, but the last couple of days my car has refused to start and needed a jump start, so I drove home last night and I called out a engineer this morning , he said test shows my battery has failed but it hasn’t failed enough to replace it, I was only getting 12% charge but if it’s over 11% they won’t change it under warranty, what a joke ,I’ve been passed from one department to another and back again without any success , don’t join the RAC
