Really rating should be nil!!! I called to ask for assistance at 12.44pm and was told it will be approx 4-5 hours before they could send anyone out. I am a woman in the car on my own, okay I was sat in a car park at the petrol station with nothing else around remote area just over an hour from home. Kept getting texts saying they are busy, delayed, due to the current situation, traffic very busy. But after 4 hours waiting I rang to ask what was going on, I was then told that they estimated that someone would be with me at 19.55!!!!!!! Nearly 7 hours waiting for help absolutely appalling, I did check that they were aware that I was not at home and that I was a woman on my own, the answer I got was there is nothing more they can do to help me they are just the call centre. After a few exchange of words I was offered a taxi to take me home , over an hour away and come back in the morning!!! What an absolute Joke. At 4.45 I had had enough and sorted it out my self. I got home at 19.00 and had a text saying that someone will be with me in 20 mins depending on traffic, I rang the number the mechanic gave me he said that he had only just been given the job 10 minutes ago....... what more can I say???

I've been a loyal customer of the RAC since I was 19. I'm now 64. I used to always have both my car insurance and breakdown assistance with them. The insurance cover I cancelled a couple of years ago because I became fed up with the premiums rocketing up each year despite me never once making a claim - so much for years being a loyal customer. Just where was your loyalty to me RAC? The breakdown cover I kept. I've renewed it every year over the years despite only ever calling them out twice. Having it gave me peace of mind. However all this changed a couple of weeks ago. My car wouldn't start. No warning just suddenly refused to go. Called out RAC. Arrived promptly. Lovely chap both helpful and friendly. Run tests and announced car needed new battery. Fair enough I thought however a bit staggered when told cost would be £215. I was in a bit of a fix really because if I turned the engine off the knackered battery wouldn't re-start it. So I bit the bullet and coughed up. Whilst the battery was being replaced I took the opportunity to go on line and check the prices of stop-start batteries supplied and fitted by RAC patrolmen. The same make and type suitable for my car was advertised at £70 less. I queried this with the patrolman who could offer no explanation why this was so. With a sigh of reluctant resignation I had no choice but to suffer the misery of pursuing the matter through the RAC Customer Services route. What a waste of time that was. Endless hours of waiting for calls to be answered that never were and composing emails that nobody ever replied to either. All I wanted to know was why their was such a difference in the price I was charged for the battery fitted to my car versus prices advertised on line. But I got no where and the more RAC Customer Services blanked me the more annoyed I got. My query soon became a complaint. After 2 weeks trying I did eventually get to correspond (by email) with some officious woman who simply dismissed my query without neither answering it or indeed offering any kind of tangible explanation. To me it was clearly a bluff to cover up a scam. I felt I was deliberately sold the more expensive model of a manufacturers battery when a cheaper model made by the same Company could have sufficed and been fitted. And if I'm wrong and it were a case that the Patrolman only had the more expensive model in stock on board his breakdown van then why could someone at the RAC just admit that and say so? The experience has just left me feeling I can't trust the RAC.

I waited six hours for recovery yesterday. I broke down at 8 and he didn't arrive untill 2pm. The recovery driver, when unstrapping the bike from the truck ripped the front headlight off when he unstrapped the bike and the strap got caught. He then told me he didn't damage it when I literally watched him do it as I was steadying the bike to help him.

I broke down in a dangerous part of the road and called my recovery. Waited nearly an hour only to be told that the adviser had set up recovery for a postcode 40+ miles away. Had to reschedule a recovery and was left waiting hours, all in all 3 hours. Car started when I was recovered but I was left without any information of what had happened after no breakdown report or checks were made. Did it again 2 days in a row so had to get to the garage myself for repairs. Really unhappy with the service even after complaining. Customer service is appalling. Avoid.

I broke down yesterday, 15/11/2020 on the M1, just past junction 34 heading north. This is four lanes now so no hard shoulder. I knew it was a serious electric fault because all the dials suddenly stopped working, Alternator, a known fault on triumph motorcycles of this age,2005. So inside lane, no hazards, battery completely fried, I'm scared. call the RAC, explain the situation,I tell the operative no point sending a mechanic, I need a flat bed truck to get me home. Highways arrived, cordoned off the lane and we waited. About 30 minutes later Simon arrived, a mechanic in his little van. He can't start it so he rings for a flat bed. grrr. Another 30 minutes a third party company, Richford recovery ring, and say they've been given the job. But they won't get there for another 60 to 90 minutes. At this point the Highways agency chap says he can't keep the lane closed off for that length of time. He sent for a flat bed from them, saying to me whichever comes first will get me off. The Highways flat bed arrives first and takes me and the bike to the nearest services. £150 thank you very much. Richford arrived about 30 minutes later and took me home. Rang RAC today and asked for reimbursement. Not their policy. If you're looking for breakdown cover, look elsewhere.

First time with rac and the experience we had was terrible found out we we're only covered 10 miles from home but the garage i was getting towed to was 20miles they wanted to charge me £7 a mile so would cost me £70extra with my cover.and thats with the top cover worth it if you breakdown 10 miles from your front door so avoid this company

Terrible service & awful Customer Care. Clearly this company does not value me as a customer. Joanna Wiseman, Director for Roadside Operations seems to think it's acceptable that my recovery had not been logged correctly on the system which caused me to wait for 11.5 hours for a breakdown recovery truck.

I'd give a lower star rating if I could. My teenage daughter had a flat tyre on the side of a country road whilst alone with her dog. After two hours the RAC said a mechanic was on his way. They gave his name and phone number. He texted to say he was fifteen minutes away. An hour later when he hadn't arrived she got back through to the RAC (you're in a queue when broken down for 30 minutes to 1 hour). They said he had gone off shift so wasn't coming anymore but someone else had been dispatched and would be there within the hour. An hour later when noone arrives she rings back again (40 minute delay to get through). Now they say it will be an hour for someone to come and no one had been dispatched. She has now been in a hot car with a dog overheating for 4 1/2 hours - because they lied to her about someone coming she didn't leave the car and was now suffering the effects of sunstroke. We ring up a local mechanic who arrives fifteen minutes later, changes the tyre in ten minutes and she is ready to drive home. Unfortunately as she is now too ill to drive I have to come out and collect her and the car. Six and a half hours have now passed, as we drive away from the site an RAC mechanic rings her to say he's fifteen minutes away. We tell him he's not needed. The time overall taken is ridiculous, the complaints department just say that they don't guarantee how long it will take to come out and completely refuse to address the issue that she was lied to. If they were honest she would have gone somewhere safe. They kept her in the car on a lonely road for six and a half hours by lying that someone was on their way.

RAC - recovery and breakdown company. Where to start with such poor service provided to my father! My father broke down at approximately 16:00 yesterday afternoon. He reported the incident immediately to RAC in order to request recovery. Initially my father was informed that RAC will attend within 3/4 hours. Whilst waiting for recovery he also received a confirmation text to state that the report had been raised and RAC were due to attend soon. After waiting 4 hours for RAC to arrive, my father followed up with RAC over the phone at around 20:00pm to be informed that the initial report for recovery wasn’t processed due to an error made their end. Subsequently my father submitted a second report with RAC and he was then informed that recovery would be out to him within the next 2 hours. However after waiting for a further 2 hours, my father contacted RAC to notify them there had still been no sign of recovery arriving and request an update, at which point RAC confirmed the error had occurred once again and the report for recovery didn’t go through at 22:05pm. RAC made it clear this was yet another error their end and went on to raise a THIRD report of the incident and promised that recovery would arrive 00:05... My father finally had recovery with him at approximately 00:49 and later arrived home at 03:00 in the morning. My father waited a total of 9+ hours for recovery to arrive because of RAC’s repeated errors and failure to address the situation appropriately. My father was not only stranded for over 9 hours but was also left out in the freezing cold with no food, heating or water! After such a terrible experience I would strongly advise against using RAC services.

It took 4 hours for me to be seen by a patrol car. Not the fault of the technician. I did not pay to wait 4 hours for a breakdown vehicle to come and help. Shocking service.

First call handler refused to send someone out as my policy didn't cover the issue apparently. This was despite having the top package with them . I explained we had 2 young children with us and he didn't care in the slightest. Rang back again and spoke to someone else about our issue who agreed to send someone out. Absolutely awful, left waiting with two children for nearly four hours , late at night and still no one had turned up. When I called to see where they were I was told we would be looking at another 45 minutes so that's nearly a 5 hours wait. Ended up Cancelling them, ended up getting cabs to get us all home and having to abandon the vehicle. AVOID THE RAC !!

Not even worthy of one star Informed by a male member of staff, I was not covered for recovery service despite having paid for the top package with the RAC. Call handler said no one would come out unless I paid more money to them . I explained I had 2 young children on board he was rude and didn't care at all. We rang back again and was then told by another lady that they would be out within 3 to 4 hours ........ waited around with 2 young children for nearly four hours I rang RAC and was told if would be another 45 minutes so we were looking at a 5 hour wait. ended up calling a cab and having to abandon the vehicle. my advice is AVOID !!

What a nightmare and what terrible help from the RAC. Last Friday when the temperatures were 39 degrees our Caddy Van broke down. We rang the RAC immediately and was told that there was an extra charge as we were out of the area our membership covered. I said I didn't care I would pay whatever charge was applicable. Someone rang back and waffled on about what the trouble could be and to get to a mechanic DUH! The van re started so we felt it would be good if we could get somewhere more congenial to park bearing in mind the heat of the day. Wrong decision as the van stopped again. We were stuck on the Brand Hyway with trucks and cars passing at horrifying speed almost hitting us twice. A few samaritans stopped to help and we managed to get the van further off the road. I continued to ring RAC as the hours passed, they then eventually said a tow truck would be out. This was at 4 pm by now at least the heat was dissipating. At about 6.45pm a RAC van turns up checks the van and says he had no idea we needed a tow truck as apparently a white Caddy Van that had also broken down up the road from had been transported away. Made us wonder if there had been some miscommunication, he said he would try to arrange a tow truck. TRY!!!!! at just before 7pm we had a phone call from Daynite Towing and the lady called Karen was the first person to enquire as to our welfare. I am 74 years old and my female companion also elderly and she was aghast at how we had been looked after. She sent a truck out to us straight away but it took just under an hour and a half to reach us as it had to come from Geraldton. The driver Fraser was wonderful he got the van onto the truck with our two dogs that were in crates inside the van and us safely in the cabin of the truck. We left Perth for Geraldton from Upper Swan at 11am in the morning and arrived at Greenough camping site at 11pm at night. Being stuck on the side of the Brand Hyway when it is first hot, then dark is not an experience I would ever want to go through again. Our van is still in Geraldton and I have arranged for Daynite Towing to bring it back to Perth to our mechanic. As well as the incompetent service from the RAC what disappointed me the most was the lack of concern for two elderly ladies stuck in the middle of nowhere in a very unsafe situation.
