tldr; SCAM - THEY CHARGED US £330 FOR A TINY INSIGNIFICANT SCRATCH THAT WE ARE PRETTY SURE WE DIDN'T CAUSE. Really awful place and would recommend you find somewhere else to rent a car. Generally we didn't have too many issues getting the car, although it did take quite a while for us to be seen (about an hour), the person was helpful and we went along our way fine. However, when we came to return the car we were met with an apparent problem. Somehow a tiny scratch was found on the roof of our car. This scratch was so small that we did not see it on our first inspection of the car. We are 99% sure we did not cause the scratch since the car was left in the open and wasn't driven through any bushes/trees so no scratch could have been made on the roof. The manager 'Rob' was completely unhelpful with the whole situation, very inhumane in his approach and seemed like he was just taking part in their regular scam to get more money. This seems almost certainly true seeing all the other people claiming the exact same thing. I wish I had looked at the reviews earlier. I am going back to Edinburgh in September and was going to use this company again but funnily enough that's definitely not happening this time.

My wife and I live in Spain. Before our recent visit to the UK we booked a hire car at Stansted Airport, using CarJet, which had quoted a very attractive £178.26 for a week’s rental. It was only when the voucher arrived in my inbox that we realised that the vehicle would be supplied by Green Motion Rent a Car. Our previous experience of this company had not been ideal. Green Motion’s offices are never at the airport terminal but at least a bus ride away. At Stansted they occupy a portakabin in the car park of the Novotel. Shuttle buses run on the half hour, so if you miss one you are in for a long wait. Then there’s the speed, or lack of it, at which Green Motion does the paperwork, never, in our experience, much less than an hour. SLOW MOTION would seem more appropriate. Other firms do it in ten minutes, and I refuse to believe that even Green Motion employees all suffer from underactive thyroids. As my new driving licence had not arrived by the time we were about to leave Spain, I had to amend my booking so my wife could be sole driver the rental car. On accessing the online form I discovered that Green Motion had added a charge for their Platinum insurance package which had more than doubled cost from £178.26 to £403.00. As I had not opted for this package I removed it. I then received an email from CARJET offering me additional insurance with AXA for £24.38 to which I agreed. When we went to pick up the car, the person we dealt with at the Green Motion office attempted to scare us into accepting the exorbitant Platinum package on the grounds that the AXA policy was only third party and inadequate to protect us from a range of hideous consequences which would probably result from our refusing to fork out yet more cash. Green Motion and Carjet appear to be singing from different hymn sheets. This may be simple incompetence. Or not. The paperwork process was drawn out further by the fact that ‘our’ Green Motion rep became involved in a dispute between two of her colleagues and an indignant customer complaining about damage he was alleged have caused to his rental car. Warning bells ought to have begun to sound, but by this time all we could think of was to escape and begin our long-delayed journey. Our return flight to Spain was scheduled to leave at 8.05 a.m. which meant that we needed to be at the airport for 6.00 am at the latest. Every other car rental firm we have dealt with has an out of hours key drop facility The Green Motion office opens at 6.00 am and the return guide states ‘We do not accept out of hours returns. You remain responsible for the vehicle until it can be checked by a member of staff’. Online reviews speak of customers being fined exorbitantly for being unable to comply with this rule. As we could not risk missing our flight, we were obliged to return our vehicle a day early, which cost us a night’s hotel accommodation and two taxi rides. We had made only one journey in the rental car, which had spent the rest of the week in secure off-road parking. When we returned the vehicle the GM vehicle inspector was all smiles until we refused to accept responsibility for an almost invisible scratch he immediately claimed to have found on a wheel trim. This, he said, would cost us £160.00. (I wonder how many customers they charge for the same scratch). At this point the charming Green Motion rep barked at me ‘You will not be allowed to rent from Green Motion again. (As if!) The fuel is OK. You can go and get the shuttle’. In fact, when I later looked at my credit card statement it was clear that Green Motion had charged an extra £50.00 for fuel and not refunded the £35.00 they owed me for unused pre-paid fuel. To put it another way: We had used £15.00 worth of petrol and they tried to charge £85.00. A recent Guardian Money feature detailed some of the large number of customers who have been ‘caught’ by Green Motion’s practice of charging huge bills, sometimes of £1,000 or more, for minor scratches and blemishes. The article comments that ‘firms selling car hire too cheaply will lose money if you don’t take their insurance, so will try to recover their profit by ‘finding’ scratches and damage that are billed to you at extortionate rates.’ There are reports of inspectors heading straight to ‘damage’ located in such inaccessible places as under the car or behind bumpers. The Guardian article reveals that Green Motion vehicle inpectors’ remuneration includes a bonus scheme and it is crystal clear that Green Motion charges for ‘damage’ on an industrial scale. Green Motion’s prices may appear to be low, but you can easily end up paying vastly more than if you rented from a reputable company such as Avis or Alamo with premises conveniently in the airport complex or the car rental village. Beware!

They use a very unreliable bus service from Heathrow airport. HOTEL HOPPA Which did not run on time over 30minutes late. No way to contact their office directly the office is closed at 6p.m not 7p.m Contacted Holiday Inn no way could relay any messages. They tried to blame broker, said we will give you an up grade. WHAT A JOKE THEY LIED THERE WAS NO UPGRADE. ORIGINAL CAR HAD ORDERED SPENT MORE THAN 90 MINUTES AT THE COUNTER, THEN BLAMED IT ON COVID. WORST THAN USED CARYARD FOR BULL.

I booked a car with Green Motion at London Stansted using Ryanair car hire. I then filled in the pre registration direct with them, after which I received an e mail stating they could not process the rental as my occupation was '' delivery driver'' The payment had already left my account and when I asked for a refund they replied it was not for them to pay , I had to claim through the broker ( Ryanair ). What appalling service ! I have booked with Green Motion many times over the years but never again. How they determine a delivery driver is not suitable to rent a car is a mystery. I checked various reviews to see if anyone else had similar problems and I was amazed to see the number of negative messages about this company. Simple thing is don't use them , there are plenty of better options

I cannot believe this company is still in business. Everything about the organization is a rip off. We booked a package deal online through Priceline and included insurance. Well, we were told we needed $300k in liability insurance which is crazy, what was the purpose of me paying for insurance. Then, we were told we would be charged for three days when we only had the car for two full days. Now, let’s talk about the car. The car was brought to us with the traction light on which is unacceptable, the car had visible damages to the bumper, the seats and the roof of the car was filthy. I cannot believe that this company didn’t get the car fix, what’s the purpose of insurance when you’re not going to get the car fix. I will post pictures and videos of this car. This is the worst rental car I’ve ever been too. DO NOT RENT HERE!!! This company don’t deserve any stars.

Please please save yourself and avoid them. Horrible service (smirking when I collected the car) horribly dirty car but in a rush so I had to go, refused to inspect car together and just plain bad. And the charges for damages are a clear scam. 845 GBP for replacing windscreen on a seat? Which just happened to be nearly the maximum amount they could hit me for. Did not send actual repair invoice do will struggle to collect from insurer. Life is too short. Avoid them completely. They get a surprising amount of 5 star reviews and 1 star ones. Makes you wonder why that is. Also car given to me had 5 noted and 1 not noted damage. So all the claims about actually repairing everything are likely just claims.... You are probably better off just walking or taking a bus or just not going than use this organisation and it's services

I don’t know where to start… one day before the appointment I got a message from them telling us to send documents to them to accelerate the car pickup process next day, or arriving earlier to fill in the paper on the day to pick up the car.. my appointment was at 12pm, so I arrived about 11:25pm, but the staff told me I was too early and the car was not ready… and told me to come back in 15 minutes… Then at the time of picking up the rental car, the staff told us that I must purchase their additional car insurance in order to pick up their car.. I told him that my (BOA) credit card has rental car insurance, but he insisted that his company didn’t take BOA credit card rental car coverage…if I didn’t purchase their additional rental car insurance, I wouldn’t be able to pick up the car, and it was considered a “no-show” situation which means my pre-payment wouldn’t be refunded… I felt like they were ripping me off… and I saw that happen twice before me, two American customers were suffered the same treatment (I was in line to witness that).. Additional rental car insurance is always optional, if Green Motion is special that requires it, they should’ve put it in writing on their website and notified their customers when we booked it… Then after all these troubles, we paid the additional insurance because we just wanted to go and enjoy our holiday… we thought we finally could start enjoying our holiday, then we found out the car’s tank was not even half full, about 1/4… WTF!! We were already on the road, so we had to find a gas station!!! We were too frustrated to check it when we finally picked up the car… After we filled up the car, the disaster continued, the system notified us that two tires had low pressure… WTH!!!! So we had to find a gas station that has air… we found one and tried filling in the air, the car just won’t take the air and kept telling us low pressure, and we found another gas station to try but it didn't work again.. and then the third gas station to try, the car just wouldn't take new air.… WTF!!!! So we gave up… we just drove super slow and avoided all the curbs and holes…. Then we saw there was a piece of paper in the back seat telling us that we MUST wipe and sanitize the car before returning it (see attached picture), or there will be a fine of £96… WTH!!!! It’s like you go to a hotel and then you have to clean the room before you leave!!! We are not dirty people, how could you expect customers to mop and sanitize the car??? The worst is that I complained to their manager via emails, who only told us that’s the company policy about the additional insurance…. It feels like “thank you for letting us rip you off!”

Worst hire car company we have ever used! Car dirty with many old scratches, just a small amount of petrol in car on pick-up instead of full tank like other firms. No unlimited mileage which we usually have on hiring. Then on return a very officious man came storming over and went through the car with a fine tooth Combe obviously looking for something to catch us on. He eventually found an old scratch which he claimed wasn't there when we collected the car! Charged us 350 pounds!! Total scam! This was Stanstead Airport this weekend. Would advise anyone to avoid Green Motion at all costs. Also be aware that there is a fairly long bus ride out to the company to even get the car. Not so good after a long flight.

Just google "Green Motion Scam". Tells you everything you need to know. Got charged almost 900 Sterling over super lightly scratched alloys. The rental agreement you sign does not tell you the terms on their website are more extensive, nor does it say you agree to those either. But they'll slap you with the hidden fees listed there all the same!

Three employees that attended us did not provide us with a claiming form when we asked for it. We were charged 285€ for a very tiny scratch that the car had when we collected it upon arrival. Furthermore, their behaviour was extremely rude, shouting at us and not letting us write on one of the forms we signed that we did not agree with the charge they took from our credit card. One of the male employees, who was overweight, yelled at me and my husband, he left the desk where he was staying behind to confront us while screaming in a very violent way. His verbal attack made us feel very unpleasantly and his aggressive and abusive behaviour towards us made us feel obliged to pay for the aforementioned unfair charge in order not to miss our flight. We should have taken a picture of the car when we rented it. Nevertheless, we won't rent a car from Green Motion again in our lives.

Returning the Car was the worst ever experience. Feeling that they were trying to find anything to charge us more money, they "decided" to charge us 400€ for a scratch that had 2cm, and could hardly see it. Felt scammed in every way of the process. Do not use this company. Just a warning.

So my company booked me a hire car with green motion, everything seemed to be going well, was a bit of a pain that the car wasn't at the airport (Gatwick) and had to get a bus to the compound to pick it up (wasn't really the end of the world) good customer service at the front desk, got given a nice car. my issue started when I got back to Guernsey after my trip. I had an email from Green Motion saying that I had x2 dart charges, coming to a total of £136 , Now I didn't really know what this was until I googled it as I am not from the uk but it looks like I took the wrong turning and went over the Dartford crossing, then to rectify my mistake went back over the Dartford crossing to get back on my correct path. So of course this being my fault I was happy to pay the £136 worth of fines. Then a couple of weeks later I get a letter from the Department for Transport saying I have x2 fines I need to pay coming to a total of £75, this must have been some mistake as I have already paid Green Motion for these fines.... contacted Green Motion only to find out that what they had in fact charged me for was ADMIN FEE's!!!!! They had charged me almost double the fines as Admin Fees! When I contacted Green Motion they said I had sighed the contract that stated theses charges in article 13...… I feel like these charges are a complete RIP OFF!! this is just not fair and Green Motion should be ashamed of themselves for taking advantage of people.
