“they said they didn't have the car I reserved and paid for and I had to get a 250 pound upgrade for a week... to get what I already paid for online. The car was dirty, old muffin paper wrapper in the console. If you have any parking tickets, the company charges a ridiculous fee - one parking ticket was a $100 use fee, and I had to pay the parking ticket on top of the fee. My colleague also rented a car, they claimed he had some minor damage on his return... NEVER, NEVER rent from them... this is my opinion only base on my experience.”
“I organised car hire from this company at Edinburgh airport through Ryanair on their website. A couple of weeks prior to taking my trip, Ryanair changed the outgoing flight time which meant that I couldn't collect my car when originally planned. I contacted Green Motion to inform them of this and to arrange a new collection time and in their response, they demanded £200 in order to do so. This meant that I had to return to the airport and sit around for hours to only then return to the Green Motion office located in the middle of nowhere, which is only accessible by bus at the original time to collect my car.
I found the staff to be very polite, obliging and helpful, Dilyan in particular. On one of my visits to the office, I was told by staff NOT to arrange a booking in future through Ryanair but to contact them directly instead, particularly when it comes to arranging insurance. Returning my car was a very easy and speedy experience.
Going forward I would not arrange car hire through Ryanair's website.”
“This place was a scam I reserved through armed forces travel. They completely lie about their pricing you reserve a car for a price then they add pricing once you go pick it up. They have an outrageous 2000k deposit. They don’t take your insurance coverage. I went from a 120.00 reservation to almost 500.00 dollars. Not military friendly unprofessional scammers. Preying on false advertising. They should not be allowed to continue to lie to the public leading on with false pricing until you show up in person.”
“Tricked into paying stupidly expensive insurance when picking up car and thinking it was just a deposit I would get back.
Only enough petrol in car to just get me to my destination when I picked up car.
Passing my complaint all around
Never using again and still waiting for refund”
“SCAM!! DO NOT RENT FROM GREEN MOTION AT ZURICH AIRPORT. We received a bill a few days after returning the car for nearly 2.000 CHF for what appeared to be a very minor scratch that they claimed occurred during our rental period. We were tricked by the number of positive Google reviews, which are clearly fake - do not make the same mistake. This service is a scam and if you read the low reviews you will see that there is a clear pattern of claiming minor damages and charging disproportionately high fees for repairs that were not even made. This happened to myself as well as my friend during the same period. Avoid this rental service!! They are unethical and will try to scam you.”
“Would not use again. Please avoid.
The cheap headline price was not worth it. On arrival there was a big push for expensive extra insurance, and the whole setup felt designed to upsell.
I picked the car up at night in poor light. The paperwork already showed existing damage to the alloy wheel / rim, yet when I returned it the next day, after only around two hours of driving, I was told there was damage to the tyre sidewall next to that existing rim damage, and that I had to pay or lose my £1,500 deposit. I absolutely did not hit a kerb or strike anything.
£200 for a scuff on the tyre that I did not cause. A full set of tyres would cost less.
What should have been a simple rental turned into months of dispute, stress, and debt recovery emails over a relatively small amount of damage. In the end I paid just to make it stop.
My view: Green Motion operate in a way that feels predatory. Costs are stripped down to create an attractive headline price, service suffers badly, and if anything goes wrong, whether it was your fault or not, you may find yourself liable.”
“FRAUD ALERT: Do not rent from here!
I was scammed by Green Motion Zurich for 1,617.43 CHF. They charged my card days after the rental for a "scratch" less than 2cm that I did not cause.
I have high-definition video evidence recorded at the exact moment I returned the car in their garage, proving the vehicle was spotless and undamaged. I have sent this proof to them and tried to resolve this multiple times, but they completely ignore my emails and refuse to reply. They simply take your money and stop communicating.
DO NOT RENT HERE. It is worth paying a little more for a reputable company at the airport to avoid being hit with a 1,600+ CHF fraudulent bill. Check the other reviews—this is a systemic scam.”
“We rented a small vehicle near Zurich Airport for a period of five days. Upon returning the vehicle, we were charged approximately CHF 2,000 for a range of alleged damages.
We do acknowledge that we caused damage to the fog light. According to the company’s internal report, the replacement cost for the fog light amounts to CHF 250, in addition to CHF 200 per hour for labor. While we consider the rate to be high, we do not dispute this portion of the charge.
However, we strongly contest the additional charge of CHF 1,150 for repainting the entire vehicle. This charge appears unjustified for the following reasons:
The area surrounding the fog light shows no visible scratches.
The component surrounding the fog light is made entirely of plastic and does not require repainting, not to speak of repainting the entire vehicle
Any other scratches present on the car were pre-existing and documented in the vehicle handover report prior to the rental period.
We did not cause any further damage to the vehicle beyond the actual fog light.
Despite this, the company, Green Motion, charged the full amount of our deposit immediately, without providing sufficient evidence or documentation. We have formally requested an official repair invoice, but have received no response to date.
Based on the above, as far as we can tell, we have been scammed for the maximum of our deposit.”
“I was rented a car with a buckled wheel. The after sales service I received when I tried to resolve the issue was appalling. The staff at the Heathrow branch were less than helpful. I’ll never use this company again!”
“Worst service levels ever. Heavy handed sales tactics when I sought to upgrade from manual to automatic - which ended up costing me twice what I had already paid. The car they gave me had a serious oil leak. I reported it in writing and by phone and received no response 10 days later - the oil leak still happening - I had to make several calls before a manager told me that there would be no replacement car because nothing like that was reported at pick up/handover - as if customers are expected to conduct full mechanical checks in poorly lit car parks at 7pm at night in the cold winter. This is a deeply unethical company with zero service ethos. Reading others' reviews I am bracing for more unpleasantness when I return the car. AVOID AVOID AVOID. If I could review at zero star (or minus), I would”
“We were completely scammed at Zurich airport on return of the car. We had no mishaps but 10 days after we returned the car we were sent photos of two small scratches which they claimed we had done ( we dispute this completely) which they proceeded to charge us 2000 euros for. The internet is full of terrible experiences customers have had with this company which unfortunately we only read afterwards. AVOID at all costs.”
“Extremely poor experience we had with both Car Jet and Green Motion during our recent booking.
When we arrived on our booking date to collect our vehicle at Green Motion in Edinburgh, we were informed that our Australian (New South Wales) Driver’s Licences were not acceptable/valid because they did not display an issue date. This was both unexpected and unreasonable.
The General Conditions of Green Motion do not specify that an issue date must appear on the driver’s licence. They do, however, clearly state that Australian driver’s licences are accepted. Likewise, the booking confirmation and email reminders only stated that we needed to bring our original driver’s licence and the rental receipt. Again, there was no mention whatsoever of an issue date requirement. We made our booking months in advance, so this lack of clear information is extremely disappointing. The information provided which we relayed on, we now find incomplete and misleading.
However, as a company that lists Australia as an accepted licence authority, Green Motion should be aware that the New South Wales Driver’s Licence is a valid, professional, and internationally recognised document.
Because of this unexpected rejection, we were left without transport and forced to make urgent alternative arrangements to avoid missing our itinerary. Sixt had no available 7-seater vans, and we ultimately had to book two vehicles with Enterprise at a significantly higher cost. Notably, neither of these companies had any issue accepting our Australian licences.
This situation caused unnecessary stress, financial loss, and disruption to our trip. We have shared our experience with colleagues, friends, and community members, all of whom were shocked by this unreasonable policy. No formal apology from both Car Jet and Green Motion. No Reimbursement of our car rental cost due to your company’s unclear and misleading rental requirements. No Reimbursement of the car insurance we paid.”
“Terrible Experience. Terrible Company.
Given a car and told it was 100% pristine. Shown the car with full lights blaring so impossible to see (felt like a tactic). Then started driving and there was a clear chip in the middle of the screen so had to stop on the way out of the airport as it was midnight and it was closing and there was no where else to stop.
Eventually the employee came out and told me not to worry.... and i would not pay exorbitant charge for the damage but this was purely by chance as he was locking up and getting ready to go home.
I was with my young son at the time and the whole experience was extremely stressful and upsetting.
Was also verbally told when i picked up the car that they needed my credit card for any fines that i may incur. Much to my shock I was fined £68 for a £50 traffic violation when i had to wait outside the airport to report the damaged window.
I thought that was the end of it but no.
Then I received debt collector letters for £170 for the same traffic violation as it turns out the credit card only covers their ADMINISTRATION FEE to pass the debt to the driver!!!!!!
A horrible horrible distressing experience I don't ever want to have to repeat.”
“Faro office. 3 day rental.
This company is a shameful outfit. From the outset I was hassled to get insurance with them, to which I said no, and when the guy kept saying, "that means you'll have to pay for any scratches", I just knew something would go wrong...and it did.
I took picture of every scratch on that car and when I returned it, they went straight to the tiniest of scratches on the door edge (2.3 cms apparently, so just over their 2cm rule) and claimed I had done this. I could barely see anything. We had the car for 3 days and only drove it for about 10 miles on 1 of them. I DID NOT hit the door at any point. I stupidly did not take a picture of this 'scratch' because I was so upset and suddenly I was being charged 73 euros.
This was basically a set up and punishment as I had not taken out the 140 Euros worth of insurance with them. There is no way they will get that 'scratch' mended and the 73 Euros is for their pocket.
This is a total scam and I would not recommend them to anyone. They are a rip off outfit”
“This was Greenmotion office in Fez ( Marrocco)
- First they gave us a car with a flat tyre, when we complained they took the car to the petrol station they pumped up the tyre and returned. We refused to take the car as the tyre had not been checked but they said they did not have any other car our category so we had to pay to upgrade and get a car.
- The person in charge urged us to check the car and make a video of all the scrathes, together with him we checked everything but he never mentioned the windshield and at simple sight it was perfect so we did not think about it. When we returned the car, the guys that checked the car went directly to the windshield and they told us there were some scratches invisible at simple sight, you had to know they were there to see them. The glass was not broken or anything just 2 tiny, invisible points and that gave them the right to keep the deposit.
We are sure we did not do that as we did not dirive by any road with little stones and at night the car was in a garage, We believe, they knew about these two tiny points that´s why they did not check the windshield on delivery.
So if you rent a car here, make sure to check your windshield at really close sight or you will lose your diposit, better go to another company.
We travel a lot and this is the first time something like this happens to us, it is a clear example of bad practice and we will not repeat with this company.”
“The worst rental service ever. I made a small mistake regarding the return time. I was forced to pay 350 pounds for extra insurance even though I had paid for extra cover on my booking. This was not recognised by Green motion. I asked if I could return the car a da earlier and stay at the nearby hotel which would have been a much cheaper option for me. This was refused and I had to pay 350 pounds so I could return the car an hour earlier. All my emails to the company asking why I was not allowed to return the car earlier and why I had to pay 350 pounds, were not answered. Is this legal? I do not live in the uk and therefore find it difficult to take action against green motion.
Appalling customer service. The worst car rental experience ever. Never again. I wished I had seen all the bad reviews before I made my booking.”
“**Unfair Charges, Admin Fees, and Poor Customer Service**
My experience with Green Motion was extremely disappointing, and I feel compelled to warn others.
Like many others have reported on Trustpilot, TripAdvisor, and REVIEWS.io, I encountered hidden fees, pressure to buy expensive insurance, and unfair charges for damage that was already present when a car was picked up. Some vehicle are in poor condition, staff are friendly but often for get to tell or help with how to use things like GPS
The worst part of my experience was being charged a **£68 “admin fee”** for a fine notification if unpaid — even though the fine itself was the result of **The green motion key fob not having a clearly written plate number on it**. I paid the Dartford Crossing charge, but I used the number plate **MJ40ZT**, which was written on the key fob. The actual plate was **MJ4OZT** — with the letter 'zero', not a 'O'. Green Motion claimed it was my responsibility to check the rental agreement for the correct plate, even though they provided plate number information on the key fob.
So, despite doing my due diligence and paying the crossing fee, and receiving an email from Dart-crossing saying thank you for the payment I still ended up with a £68 admin fee — all because of an error made and their refusal to take into account of the charge already being paid.
Add to that long wait times, unclear communication, and damage charges that seem to be a recurring theme in many reviews, and it’s clear this company operates in a way that leaves many customers out of pocket and incredibly frustrated. And no customer service after rental.
I strongly recommend avoiding Green Motion. or their associated company U-Save. A cheap headline price is not worth the hidden costs and stress that may come after.”
“⚠️ Avoid Green Motion Edinburgh – Unfair Experience for Australian Drivers
We booked our car through CarJet. and arrived on time at Green Motion Edinburgh Waverley, only to be refused the car because our Sydney, Australia driver’s licence did not show the issue date — only the expiry. Despite being in our late 50s with decades of driving experience, we were denied service because we’re unable to prove 2 years of driving experience and charged the full rental amount as a “no show.”
This policy is unreasonable and unfair, especially for international travellers whose licence formats differ. We were left stranded in the city and forced to hire another car at four times the cost. Australians — please avoid Green Motion and choose another rental company that respects valid international licence.”
“Green Motion Car Rental - Edinburgh Scotland
I have been renting cars during my overseas travels for over 20 years, and I have never experienced such a disappointing and distressing situation as the one caused by Green Motion in Edinburgh.
My friends and I booked two SUVs as early as January 2025 for our September 2025 trip around Scotland. There were nine of us in total. The rental cost was competitive, so we paid in full, including comprehensive insurance, and received a confirmation email confirming that everything was in order.
However, when we arrived to collect the vehicles, the front desk staff refused to accept our Australian driver’s licences, claiming they did not display the “date of issue” and therefore did not prove we had more than two years of driving experience. We have all been licensed drivers for over 30 years, and at no point during the booking process or in any communication were we informed of this requirement. The staff demanded an official certification from the Australian licensing authority—a document that is impossible to obtain on the spot while travelling overseas.
What made this even more unreasonable was that, just days earlier, we had successfully rented and driven two vehicles in England (London to Salisbury, Bath, and Stratford-Upon-Avon) using the same Australian licences without any issue whatsoever.
Given the lack of prior communication about this supposed policy, and the suspicious timing, we could not help but suspect that Green Motion had overbooked or reassigned our vehicles to customers willing to pay higher rates, using this “licence requirement” as a pretext.
As a result, our group was left stranded without transportation, and the Scotland leg of our holiday was completely ruined. This was a deeply frustrating and avoidable situation that caused significant stress, wasted time, and additional expense.
I am seeking an immediate and full refund, along with a formal apology for the inconvenience and distress caused. I also urge Green Motion to review and clarify their driver’s licence policy to prevent other travellers from suffering the same experience.”
