Open Studio is the perfect platform resource for intermediate players or beginners who know enough theory. As a Berklee grad that's picking up piano, I appreciate being able to reference certain concepts and skills that I'm familiar with and not having to pick through long explanations of music theory that I already know to do it. I think that the organization of concepts could use a bit more work, but overll solid 9/10.

Open Studio courses have helped me grow in my understanding of the jazz language and repertoire. The OS Pro teachers and community provide excellent coaching, feedback and interaction.

I'm very happy with the Open Studio. I've been there for more than 2 years and learned a lot. It would be also nice to have an interactive course twice a week to learn a new Standard each week by concentrating on memorizing just melody and basic chords. By the end of a year, people would know 50 new tunes to play at gigs. It would be also nice to have a course on Herbie Hancock's music and other post-bebop players.

Open Studio has literally been musically life-changing for me on so many levels. I came to Open Studio with a classical background but keen to get into jazz. Started out following on youtube, purchased some basic courses, then upgraded to membership, and then to OS Pro. I am learning so much both from the courses, the live sessions and the community. There is a place for you wherever you are on your jazz journey with OS. Loving living a musical life!

I like the personal touch of the Zoom classes. You can speak directly to the instructor. Also it's really cool when your instructor gets to know you. It makes you feel you're really a part of the class.

Unmatched in quality, variety, and quantity of educational material, with a community that's enormously fun to be part of.

The quality of the instruction and the content offered for jazz piano (my instrument) are all excellent. I like that OS offers a variety of 'levels' of instruction, but also that one can also take classes/courses from various levels and even learn about instruments other than one's primary instrument. I listened to some of Gregory Hutchinson's introductory drum classes to better understand the role of drums in a jazz ensemble, and to better understand what I am listening to on recordings. Similarly fascinating were the classes with Peter Martin's trio explaining how they approach playing in the group context. The classes are all deeply grounded in the history of jazz and in the recordings and concepts of the master players of the music. It will take some time for my playing to incorporate many of the teachings offered in the many classes I have enjoyed - and often gone back to review. I also feel the need to strike a balance between taking classes, and simply doing the work that can only happen when you are by yourself in the practice room with your instrument. However, I think that OS supports that balance and allows for connection to a very positive jazz community. I have just started exploring OS Pro, and am enjoying Adam's Repertoire Club, the GPS Trio, and Peter's Jazz Piano Method, plus the inspiration of Mentor Sessions. The live sessions available through OS Pro have another dimension to them which is inspirational and meaningful, and offers more opportunity for direct interaction and questions. Being from a pre-digital generation for much of my education, I am still getting used to asking questions through the "Chat" format, while still concentrating on the teaching taking place and playing my instrument, but the quality of the courses is great. I know two of the concepts that guide Open Studio - the idea of Restrictive practicing and the caveat that you "Can't Information Your Way to Jazz" have been important 'correctives' or reminders for me since my theoretical mind has been ahead of my performance capabilities for some time. Additionally, a fascination with learning has put me in a place of information overload at times, and Open Studio has helped me to sort some of that out, simplify my practice, and make some 'progress' in my playing. Such a wonderful community of people for studying jazz and sharing music!

I had been listening to open studio as a podcast in my car on my commute to work years ago. When Chris Parks opened the guitar community, I jumped on and have been so very pleased and taken back by the experience and engagement. Hope to continue for a long time to come.

Open studio manages to be relevant to beginning jazz students and professionals. There is great interplay among the students. The Hang, a kind of face book for jazz, is pure and always positive. Which is to say it is the anti-Facebook. It is a community. The many courses will give you more information that a single person could ever digest. The faculty are without exception exceptional. There is a joy vibe with every live session, and the teachers and other attendees without fail are encouraging and supportive of people playing before the class, irrespective of level. I loved jazz enough to take a chance on paying the membership fee. Now I love and appreciate jazz more than ever. Now, I consider that getting my money's worth.

It’s been a great way to stay accountable, and push myself to learn some things I wouldn’t otherwise. Jeremy’s songwriting course was a nice surprise that I would not have pursued on my own, but I ended up learning a lot about song structure that helps me learn and understand standards, but surprised me by how much fun it was to write my own tunes as well! Really great community, thank you!
