I’ve been using this custom Defiance 16” model laptop for 6-months. I needed a future-proof, somewhat portable and powerful laptop capable of managing large databases, maintaining extensive indexes, very large excel spreadsheets integrated with python, OCR and translating very large documents and somewhat able to cope with AI and local LLM’s. Occasional image and video editing but not at pro levels. No gaming requirement. In normal use there are extensive background processes plus demanding foreground work. I targeted the most powerful laptop I could afford, that would handle heat without throttling or excessive fan noise when under load. Fast high capacity SSD’s where also important with a reasonably high spec graphic card to help with AI and local LLM’s. The Defiance 16” models provided a superb base, hard to find elsewhere. Key components included: Processor: Intel Core i7 14650HX with Arctic MX-4 Extreme Thermal Compound, System SSD: 1 x 1TB SAMSUNG 990 PR, Data SSD: 2 x 4TB SAMSUNG 990 PRO, RAM: 2 x 32GB Corsair 4800MHz SODIMM DDR5, Graphics: QHD+ 240Hz sRGB (2560 x 1600) screen with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Power: 230W AC Adaptor The laptop has been extremely fast and rarely struggles under heavy load. For the most part fan noise is acceptable ranging between silent and a slight purr under low loads, under medium to heavy load the fan become more noticeable but usually not to a level that is intrusive. Standard CPU temps are in the range 50-60°c, under heavy load 70-80°c, under extreme loads it will briefly peak at up to 90°c. The provided ControlCentre is normally set-and-forget, but allows effective real-time configuration of CPU and Cooling to mitigate high temps if required. Cons. • The sound is awful. It can be improved to just about acceptable quality using Equalizer and Peace APO’s. For me this isn’t a deal-breaker. • In 6-months I’ve experienced maybe 6 blue screens for reasons that aren’t clear, this may be OS or driver related or perhaps when running under very high load. • I’d prefer additional USB ports, although in practice chaining from the USB-C has been adequate. • The power and LAN connections on the back of the Defiance can be mildly inconvenient and easy to knock. Overall the Defiance has completely fulfilled my requirements. Its not the smallest laptop, but is somewhat portable; speed, reliability, screen-size and overall brute-force have completely met my requirements. The case and hinges feel solid. If only focused on using local LLM an AI focused laptop may be better, but for use of 7-15 parameters local LLM’s the Defiance is more than adequate and can push to more demanding LLM’s on occasion. When deciding on Defiance specs the PCSpecialists staff where responsive and helpful. Price v Specs this laptop is hard to beat and I recommend.

The PC arrived beautifully packaged and in excellent condition, with everything working perfectly from the start. Although the delivery time was longer than indicated on the website, I was kept well informed throughout the process, which made the wait manageable. Overall, I’m very satisfied with the purchase — the product quality is excellent and the service, despite the slight delay, was reliable.

The website was super easy to use it also has very good information on who built the PC etc. I'll definitely use them in the future, it arrived with extra's that I did not expect either.

The website was great for choosing parts that were compatible and I was kept updated on the different steps as my PC was being built.

I was able to specify exactly the computer I wanted after waiting a few weeks for the right parts to be available. I was given a date when to expect this, after which I would be able to order. In fact, I was able to order a day or two before that date. Everything proceeded smoothly from that point, with frequent updates on progress. So I now have a computer which is just right.

They built my computer to order and were flexible enough that I could bring my own GPU to complete the machine myself. An unimportant part fell out in shipping but they replaced it for free no questions asked. It took longer than expected but was worth the wait.

I am a repeat customer - very happy with the kit, the options available, but most especially with the excellent service and support over the lifetime of the equipment.

Liked that there was pretty regular contact from the order stage, during the build stage, and then the delivery stage. Took a day or two longer to arrive than I initially expected but not a big deal. Only had the PC 3 weeks but my son is very pleased with it and everything we have tried to run on it has no issues at all. The minor gripe I did have is that the Bluetooth was not functional out of the box. After a visit to the forum and a few Google searches I discovered it needed drivers updated from the motherboard company's website. Would have been helpful to have a fuller explanation of how to resolve this if not something that is checked at the post build stage. Other than that a great service.

Brilliant service. Needed an upgraded PC for work and gaming, and didn't want the hassle and time of building it myself. Was recommended PC specialist and really happy with the outcome, PC working perfectly and delivered securely.

It is good that as you spec your PC the cost ticks up so that the buyer can see the cost variation between the different options. I was kept well informed by email as the build process occurred. Delivery was well organised. I bought my first desktop PC from PCSpecialist eleven years ago it has given good service and is still functioning well. The only downside was the Microsoft Office 2024 Digital Licence. I didn't fully understand what I was buying, I thought that Microsoft Office would be loaded onto my PC ready to go, my mistake. The process to download Office was anything but straightforward. I was thankful that Rene Donners in the PCS support team was patient and polite in his email support to me and eventually after a lot of faffing about I was able to dowwnload Office. In case you are still reading, I had to open a Microsoft account, then a Microsoft Store account, then scroll down to the foot of the page to search for a Library icon, click this which opened a dialogue box which read `shipped with my device' or something similar, click this which then game me the option to `Claim' my Office licence. Without PCSpecialist help, I would never have worked out this tortuous route. Perhaps a crib-sheet could be included for thaose customers who buy the Microsoft licence or perhaps I am the stupidest of PCSpecialist customers. I'll be in touch again in eleven years when this PC needs to be replaced. Thank you.

The whole process was easy. I found a wide range of choice when ordering and was confident that my final choices were compatible because the system checked it all for me. I was kept up to date during the build process, and the machine arrived safely. No that I've set it up, it's so much quicker than the PC it replaced, and it takes up such a tiny amount of desk space rather than a huge amount of floor space. I'm very impressed!

I recently ordered a custom-built PC from PCSpecialist, and the whole experience—from early research to delivery—was excellent. Customer Service & Pre-Sales Support Before making my purchase, I contacted the customer service team with several questions about their prebuilt systems. They were quick to respond, clear in their answers, and incredibly helpful. Their advice gave me the confidence to go for a custom build instead, using their very user-friendly dropdown system on the site. It was intuitive and made building my ideal setup a smooth and enjoyable process. Suggested Improvements One feature I think would really add value is a component lifecycle guide. For example, when selecting DDR5 RAM, it could note something like: “DDR5 is the latest standard and expected to remain relevant for high-performance systems until at least 2027–2028.” This sort of context would help buyers understand the longevity of their investment. Another helpful addition could be an AI-based FAQ assistant during the build process—something that offers suggestions, flags compatibility, or even estimates performance based on your parts list. The forums are a decent resource, but the mix of helpful and, at times, condescending feedback can make it a bit intimidating for newer users to post their builds for review. Dispatch & Delivery The dispatch timeline was accurate and well-communicated. I really appreciated their rolling 5-day percentage tracker—it gave me a day-by-day idea of where my order was in the queue. I actually used a probability-based AI tool to estimate when it would arrive, and sure enough, it was exactly on time. Expectations were met. Build Quality & Packaging The build quality is great. I didn’t go over the top—just aimed to maximise performance within a £1,000 budget—and I genuinely feel like I got excellent value. The system arrived well packaged, and everything looked solid. There was a slight issue with the GPU support arm, which was a bit loose and bent on arrival, but I reseated it myself and it’s held fine since. After setup, I noticed my RAM wasn’t running at full speed. A quick check in the BIOS and one simple setting change later, and it was fixed. Price vs Value There’s a common idea that PCSpecialist overprices their parts, but I compared my build against two independent vendors and the cost was only marginally different. When you factor in assembly, testing, warranty, and peace of mind, it’s absolutely worth it—especially for someone like me who understands hardware but doesn’t want the pressure of building a system solo. Final Verdict A truly excellent experience. Great customer service, smooth build process, timely delivery, and solid value. With a few thoughtful additions to the online experience (like lifecycle guides and an AI assistant), they’d be near perfect. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to customise without the stress of building it themselves.
