I don't buy the commemoratives "coins". I only buy the gold 1/4 sovereigns and there is absolutely nothing "Scammy" about them. They are exactly the same spec as the Royal Mint specimens. Usually authorised and issued by Gibraltar. The only difference is the cost is usually a bit less than The Royal Mint prices. They are legal tender but only at their face value which at current gold prices is about 1/400th of the gold value. Face value of a 1/4 sovereign is 25p the gold is currently worth just over £101.00 @ 21/03/24. The purchase price of the coin is £108.00.
