Super fun time at the highland rec area! A few things to note 1) Site K is on an incline/slant/slope. The tent itself is leveled, however, the surrounding campsite is not. The picnic table and fire pit area are all slanted, making it uncomfortable to sit on the picnic table benches (everyone in our group had back aches from the benches). Bring your own chairs (they will also be slanted but more comfy). 2) The bugs were TERRIBLE when I went (as expected) so bring a bug tent, bug spray, and candles or you will be confined to staying inside your tent most of the time. We were so so thankful to have a bug tent to put over the picnic/cabinet area. 3) There are no showers anywhere in the park, the DNR officer said we would have to drive to another park nearby to shower (at a price). 4) There is no running water near the site and the water pump near the sites did not have a handle on it so you could not use the old school water well to get water. There was at least hand sanitizer in the rustic bathroom out house that is closest to the campsites. 5) It is pet-friendly at the campsite and on the trails, however, if you want to enjoy the beach (which is located in a different area than the camp sites) dogs are not allowed at the beach. 6) bring your own treated firewood and ice. The main office does have both for purchase, however, their hours are limited and there is no guarantee that someone will be at the office (officers are out and about in the park most of the time). 7) the trail to the sites J, K and L are on an active hiking/biking trail, so there are people coming and going through the day/ early morning. We had a great time! Just wanted to share my experience so others can be prepared! There are a ton of horses around the park, there is a certain camping area for people to bring their horses. Probably about 20 or more horses all camping out for the weekend, it was a cool experience! State Park Officers were around and checked in on us every now and then, very respectfully. Nice to know someone is there in case you need anything.
