I don't normally write reviews but I am so angry that I made time to write this review. This company and the people working for it are all FRAUD. They are scammers and will continue to steal money from people. This incident happened at the Faro airport branch. I returned the car at 04:00 am and dropped of the keys and at the time, the office was closed and there was no member of staff to check the condition of the vehicle with me and hence, they took advantage of this. I received an email at 06:00 am claiming that I had damaged the Wheel Rim. The documentation emailed to me at the time of booking the car showed that the Wheel Rim was already damaged. The other fraudulent practise by this company is to keep my deposit for 30 days before they decide to return it. I sensed that these people were dodgy at the time that I picked up the car because I was told that the insurance for the excess cover is mandatory and they wanted to charge me €69 for 2 days cover but I refused and they withdrew €1500 on my credit card instead as part of the additional charges. If they think that they will keep my €100, then I have news for them. I will raise a CHARGEBACK with my credit card company. I made the booking through Opodo and I will also be raising a complaint with them . AVOID, AVOID, AVOID and AVOID THESE SCAMMERS.

!!!PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! During my horrendous experience I was told to "shut up" by one of the team at Marseille airport for having there audacity to ask a question about excess insurance. When I then asked for the manager to intervene, he also told me to be quiet and that he wouldn't speak to me until I went out, took a deep breath and joined the back of the queue. When my wife tried to explain the situation to the manager, she was also told to shut up. People queuing behind me were in shock and tried to defend me for asking the question. I had no choice but to continue with the rental as all other options were out of stock. When I reminded them we had booked a child seat, I was met with an eye roll and told they didn't have any. They then had to run next door to a neighbouring company and beg them to borrow a seat. Thankfully the other companies were in stock and prepared to help. I've emailed their customer services team and the best response I got was "we hope your experience after the rental was good"!!! From start to finish, the worst experience I've ever had with a car rental - which are notoriously bad at the best of times!! Please avoid, Goldcar will bring you nothing but hassle.

Unfair - misleading - do not use them !! Ref nr : 23926937 My father in law (80yrs) rented a car and took out EVERY insurance option he could take - including "key and go". Upon receiving the car at ALC (a Citroen with more than 65000 Km on the clock) he noticed a LOT of user damage / and the car was "soiled and unkept") and went back to the desk clerk to ask for a joint inspection. The answer was " no need - you are FULLY INSURED". (he hated driving it as it was - in his words - "dirty") When returning the car at the airport - a week later - he asked the attending clerk for an inspection / once again was told - "no need", drop keys in box please. After a few days a letter was received from Goldcar advising that they had found stains in the upholstery and they had taken 150 Euro from the credit card .. (to clean the car they say / after they refused the inspection at the start of the rental - as he TOLD them so) ... That is theft - that is unfair and misleading - if you ask for a joint inspection due concern about the state of the car - and it is deemed not neccessary - then you can not charge a customer later for something that was already there. Now Goldcar - after a lot of writing to and fro with Customer Service persist in this charge - yet - believe me - this will cost them. We run / manage a walking (Caminantes) group on the Costa Blanca (trails in the Hinterland) and have around 150 to 180 guests per annum that all rent a car. We will advise each and every one of them that a rental from GoldCar is simply not acceptable - and we will make sure that we spead the "news..." If Goldcar wish to cheat a customer out of 150 Euro's - we will make sure that they never get the opportunity again from anyone we know. Be aware - they are not honest !!!

Rented a car at Alicante airport. We checked the car at the beginning with a fine tooth comb. It had lots of damage and scratches. Checked against the diagram they provide and they had left out a large scratch that hadn’t been marked up, so I made them update the diagram. We returned it a week later. They refused to check the car over immediately and made us give the keys. We have a flight to get so we don’t have time to wait around. I checked the car again, and there was NO new damage. 3 hours later they email me and have taken £140 from our card. They have alleged that we are responsible for damage to the bonnet. They attached a photo which shows a line of dust. NOT a scratch at all! 1 - refused to check the car in front of me when I returned it 2 - How is it ok to charge someone £140, without any repair quote, invoice or real evidence of damage? We didn’t take out Goldcar’s insurance as we have our own insurance. They take advantage of this. I have done research online and this is a common scam by Goldcar. Hidden fees and lies of damage. They charge whatever they want to make money. It’s a scam. There’s Facebook groups about this and other forums online with other victims of the scam sharing stories with evidence. Search yourself. Do not be tempted by the low prices - they are a bunch of cowboys. Goldcar you have crossed the wrong person this time. Scamming me out of £140 will not be worth the it - as I will make it my absolute mission to spread the word of my experience and others and discourage every single person I know from using them. I hire cars regularly through Alicante, and this has never happened before with any other company. So just go with someone else. Trust me

Got a hire by internet, paid i'm avance 110€. At Arrival the guy said I needed an international license. So my contract was cancelled. No deposit back and no car. This is just a way to rip off turists. The DGT at Spain accepts Latin America drivers license. I went to another car rental in front off Goldscam and got a car right away.

Awful service , agent rude, had a small scratch on the number the excess was billed for £145 and they charged my credit card £189. Emailed them twice which they ignored, my credit card provider now dealing with , told me they are renowned for scamming people.

Goldcar are to be avoided. I don’t know whether they get a backhand by the Portuguese govt but they do their best to ensure you’re not aware of the via verde system so that you get a 50euro fine before you know what’s hit you. No phone number for the relevant Goldcar office and nothing in writing in the contract so it’s their word against yours (we told you/no you didn’t) and that’s your lot. For those who aren’t aware, always use the green V lanes on toll motorways and ensure your rental car is activated for it. Good luck - and don’t use them.

I selected a car that they advertised as being able to take 3 suitcases. However, when I went to collect the car, I was given a much smaller car that would not fit 3 suitcases in. I explained the situation to the man at the desk and he was very dismissive, simply repeating that the car was "similar" and that it would depend on the size of the suitcases. I pointed out that this was nonsense as the cases were standard size (they would not have been accepted by the airline if they were not). He said that there was nothing he could do but I could pay extra to upgrade to a bigger car if I wanted to. I asked why should I have to pay more when I already paid extra to get a car that would fit 3 suitcases and he just repeated the previous statements about the car being similar, the cases varying in size and that I could pay for a bigger car. There is no way I was going to give this unscrupulous company any more money, so we ended up having to make the 1 hour journey to our hotel with luggage on laps. This put a real dampener on the start of our holiday and wasted over an hour whilst I tried to get it resolved, but unfortunately their staff had absolutely no interest in trying to help at all. I have since contacted them to give them the opportunity to address my concerns, but they have not even bothered to respond. They clearly do not care, so I would urge any potential cusotmer to believe the reviews - they are an awful company that are not deserving of your custom.

AVOID Goldcar ,we were charged €150 for a valet for a water mark on a rear seat of the car we hired . There was only my wife and myself in the car and never used the rear seats , i told the goldcar staff member this and his reply was unlucky you should have taken photos . I doubt this valet will ever take place as it will give them the oppotunity to do it again to another victim. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY

Hey Goldcar Rental. I really didn't think it will need to come to this point, but your customer service is atrocious. It's been 2 months since I've made an official complaint with you about the shocking customer service me and my colleagues received at the GoldCar pick up point at the Bordeaux airport, and all you've finally given me last week was an automated email of complaint rejection. Well done you. We have already reported you to the Ombudsman and started contacting newspapers, so be sure that more people will hear about the way you treat your customers. Two women who were serving customers (one I believe was named Valerie) refused to accept my DEBIT CARDS, claiming that they are prepaid, without even trying to use them or verify them. I calmly explained to them that my neobank used to be initially a prepaid bank, but now is no longer, and on both my cards - one was Visa and the other Mastercard - there is clearly written “DEBIT” card. I also confirmed that with my bank and sent you a written proof. The two women serving customers at GoldCar didn’t want to listen to us, were very rude, wanting us to leave the office, as they wanted to close it. In a matter of moments, they turned out very aggressive, throwing racist vulgarism (!!!!!) at us and insulting my colleagues about their Spanish origins (WE HAVE RECORDINGS OF THE CONVERSATION WITH YOUR COLLEAGUES AND I'LL BE SUPPLYING THOSE TO MEDIA). We were travelling with two minors who became very stressed about the whole situation. We needed to arrive to a place 2h away and as a result of the thoughtless and primitive behaviour of your representatives, we were left without a car in a helpless situation that caused us significant psychological damage, stress, and monetary costs. As we refused to leave until we received the car that we'd paid for in advance, they called the police. In the meantime, one of the GoldCar service women physically abused and pushed (!!!!) my colleague out of the door, continuing to insult us and then did the same with another colleague of mine who tried to divide that woman from causing further physical abuse to my colleague. My colleague was called “pute espagnole” among other insults, by your representative. The policeman came and we calmly explained the situation and asked how we can make an official report and complain about what happened. The policeman listened to our testimony and then advised us “not to waste time on going to the police officially as this will not be dealt with anyway”. You've had enough time to make things right, yet you failed to do so. Now watch what an angry customer can do.

Goldcar Bordeaux. 1. Car had two bald front tyres, which I had to point out. Got a replacement car but concerning that they hadn't serviced the car beforehand. 2. Fee of ,50 euros if tank isn't returned full; why? 3. General feeling they are trying to extract money from you at every step 4. Apparently cheap but you get slammed if you exceed daily mileage with no breakdown of costs. Never using them agai and suggest no one else does either.

Shocking experience. Aggressive sales person who tried to say the insurance I had purchased wasn't any good and I needed to buy theirs. Then got a load of lies about my bank charging 10% for the deposit transfer. Subsequently found out that their commission makes up most of their salary. Avoid like the plague!

Avoid! We were pressurised into buying their insurance, even though I’d bought insurance in the UK as apparently our credit card was blocked! I was suspicious about that, but nothing I could do, and therefore I couldn’t pay the refundable excess they wanted. So we had to buy their insurance. We were initially grateful for it when a tyre blew out on a fast main road. However their phone numbers on the paperwork didn’t work so we had to ask our son to ring them from the UK! Eventually a breakdown lorry came, but took the car away and left us stranded! It was very frightening. We eventually found a taxi to take us back to our hotel. They haven’t refunded us the fuel deposit as I guess we returned the broken down car not full!!!

I rent cars about twice a year, always in a different country. This is my first time trying Goldcar and my rating is "never again". Reservation and information about rental conditions in order. A few days after the reservation, an e-mail similar (in appearance and content) to spam will arrive. You are warned that if the reservation is not confirmed in the link below, the Goldcar staff may not release the car to you. I am calling the number listed on the goldcar.es website. The worker confirms that it is their e-mail and I can fill in my details. OK, I fill it out, but nothing happens after submitting. Several times. Maybe they have an overloaded server, I'll try the next day and then a few more times. Always with the same result, nothing is sent. I call Goldcar again and am told that I don't have to fill it in and when I pick up the car I have to say that the online check-in didn't work. We arrive at Faro airport in Portugal and go to pick up the car. It wasn't early in the morning (because the staff hadn't woken up yet), or late in the evening (because they were already tired), or a holiday (because they'd rather be at home with their family), just normal working hours, a normal day. The lady who serves us is unpleasant right from the start and it only escalates throughout the process. He reacts irritated to normal questions and talks to us quite arrogantly. We're going to pick up the car. The person who gives it to us is in a similar mood, annoyed, and when asked if it is normal to have the interior of the car so dirty, he does not even want to answer. We get into the car and are quite disgusted with both the approach and the cleanliness. Goldcar never again.

Avoid this car hire company like the plague. Lots of hidden charges in the small print. I got to the collection point and handed over my voucher. The sales person immediately asked for all pages. She then went about highlighting all of the hidden charges, Car Hire Tax, deposit for fuel and mandatory policy excess charge. The quote on the comparison site was £74.00, it ended up costing me £347 for four days hire. Instead of paying the extra I asked for a refund but was told that because I had hired through an agent I could only get my money back through them. I phoned a number on the voucher for Argus Car Hire (the agents) only to be put through to Goldcar who's desk I was standing at. It is a con.

Goldcar is run by a bunch of scammers. If you have a pre-paid booking they'll find a way to rip you off. Their latest scam is the need to have an international driver license. If you don't have it you can say goodbye to your reservation and the money you paid. Avoid using local companies like goldcar, wiber or ok mobility. Stick to well know companies like hertz, avis or national. You'll save yourself a lot of headaches.

Wow. Terrible customer service. Forced to pay and sign the contract (digital) without being allowed to see it, rude and unhelpful staff, told we were crazy for wanting to see the contract first, made to pay rental and took the security deposit and fuel as a payment (not hold on the card), no directions for how to get the car, general rudeness. All this was in Spanish. The irony being we booked with “stress free car rentals . Com” - will avoid Gold like the plague in the future.

I'm absolutely discusted with my treatment by Goldstar. After booking my car in advance through Ryanair and paying in advance and for full insurance, I returned home to find that their representative have conned me out of an additional 167 euros, nearly double the original price. As I was handed a Spanish document it was explained to me my deposit would be returned as long as car was returned undamaged and full of fuel which it was. It seems now I have returned home I have been charged this extortionate fee for additional insurance. Additional costs were never mentioned at pick up. So work this out. Car hire cost me 140 euros for 8 days. Insurance was 200 euros. Also they have made no effort to reply to my many emails. Be aware of thes Thieves if choose to use Goldstar.

We have booked twice online with Goldcar to hire a car from Lisbon airport. On both occasions the customer service attendant at the pick up desk was rude and extremely unhelpful. They have a *lot* of small print in their contracts which helps them to essentially steal more money from you. On the first occasion they couldn't take a hold over my wife's credit or debit cards to cover the EUR 1.4k excess and so we had to buy *their* excess insurance for over EUR 300 (on top of the EUR 280 we had paid to book the car for a week). On the second occasion they couldn't accept either mine or my wife's cards for the excess, couldn't change the name on the booking so they could accept one of our cards, or do *anything at all* to help us, and so rather than pay over EUR 400 for their excess insurance again we had to forego the EUR 300 we had already paid to book the car and walk away to the taxi rank without a car. We emailed customer services, but, true to form, they were equally as unhelpful. This is not a safe company to book with, and they will find ways to take significantly more money than your booking cost. I wish I had read more reviews prior to booking, and made a more sensible decision. At least we now know going forward. Finally, there are clearly very good reasons Which? do not recommend Goldcar and rank them in *last place* in their review table of hire car companies (easily found with an internet search). Date of experience: 12 August 2023
